Mathematics Curriculum Intent
At Pennine Way, we want children to have the key knowledge needed to improve their mental speed, core skill accuracy and rapid recall of facts so that they can use these in wider life contexts. We intend to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills through a mastery and greater depth approach, encouraging pupils to explain their reasoning in depth. We endeavour to involve parents and carers in their child’s education so that they are confident when supporting them. As a result of this, we aim for aspirations to be raised and children to be aware of the relevance of Maths in their present and future life.
Mathematics across the school is taught through White Rose Maths to ensure that a Mastery approach is adopted. Children are taught to use and apply mathematical skills in real-life, fun and practical situations, making the most of the outdoors wherever possible. Activities are differentiated as appropriate for all ability level and the curriculum is made relevant to children’s interests and other curriculum subjects. Daily Maths lessons vary in length, but usually last for 60 minutes. This incorporates a daily ‘Early Bird’ Maths activity to develop pupils skills in mental arithmetic strategies.
Mathematics Curriculum Map
Our Mathematics Curriculum Map gives an overview of which strands of the curriculum are taught during each half term in every year group. Each concept is revisited 3 times within a year with the concepts within this becoming progressively more challenging.
