Design and Technology
At Pennine Way Primary School, Design and Technology is a creative, practical and inspiring subject that encourages children to become innovative thinkers, problem-solvers and designers. Through hands-on learning experiences, pupils develop the skills to design, make and evaluate products for real purposes and audiences, helping them understand how ideas can be transformed into successful outcomes. Our curriculum covers a wide range of areas including textiles, structures, mechanisms, mechanical systems, electrical systems, cooking and nutrition, allowing children to apply their creativity while developing valuable technical and practical skills.
From the Early Years through to Year 6, children build their knowledge and confidence through exciting projects such as moving pictures, weaving, bridge building, electrical night lights, programmable Lego systems, sewing, and cooking dishes from around the world. Alongside developing practical skills, pupils learn about influential designers, engineers and inventors including Charles and Ray Eames, Coco Chanel, Thomas Edison, Ada Lovelace, Emily Warren Roebling and George Cayley. By encouraging pupils to plan, create, test and refine their ideas, our Design and Technology curriculum equips them with the resilience, creativity and problem-solving skills they need for future learning and everyday life.
