Statement
At Pennine Way Primary School, the safety, wellbeing and happiness of every child is our highest priority. We are committed to providing a safe, caring and inclusive environment where all children feel valued, respected and able to thrive. We believe that every child has the right to be protected from harm and to grow up in an environment where they feel secure, supported and listened to.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and all staff, governors, volunteers and visitors play an important role in promoting the welfare of our pupils. We work closely with families and a range of external agencies to ensure that children receive the support they need when concerns arise. Our staff receive regular safeguarding training and follow clear procedures to identify, report and respond to any concerns about a child's welfare.
At Pennine Way Primary School, we promote a strong culture of safeguarding through our curriculum, teaching children how to stay safe both in school and online, how to build positive relationships, and how to seek help when they need it. We encourage pupils to speak openly to trusted adults and take all concerns seriously.

In KCSIE 2026, safeguarding is defined as taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes, encompassing the protection of children from harm and the promotion of their welfare.

Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass is a police and education early information safeguarding partnership enabling schools to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse.
Operation Encompass ensures that there is a simple telephone call or notification to a school’s trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (Mr Beattie) or Deputy Safeguarding Lead (Mrs Naylor) prior to the start of the next school day after an incident of police attended domestic abuse where there are children related to either of the adult parties involved.
Information is shared with these key staff members prior to the start of the next school day after officers have attended a domestic abuse incident. This sharing of information enables appropriate support to be given, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.
Children are negatively impacted by experiencing domestic abuse and without early intervention and support this negative impact can last through a child’s life course. Domestic abuse can impact upon social, psychological, physical, emotional and behavioural outcomes with an often-negative impact upon a child’s academic success. Experiencing domestic abuse has been identified as an Adverse Childhood Experience.
Operation Encompass aims, by directly connecting police and schools, to secure better outcomes for children , to enable schools to better understand the impact living with domestic abuse has upon children, to help schools to better understand a child’s lived experience and to therefore be able to support and nurture each child , making a child’s day better and giving them a better tomorrow.
