Pennine Way Primary School

Art and Design

At Pennine Way Primary School, we believe that Art and Design is a powerful way for children to express themselves, develop their creativity and build confidence in their own ideas. Through a rich and inspiring curriculum, pupils explore a wide range of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, collage, printing, sculpture and digital art, while learning about the work of influential artists, designers and architects from different cultures and time periods. Children draw inspiration from a diverse range of artists including Claude Monet, Frida Kahlo, Sonia Boyce, Banksy, Stephen Wiltshire, Andy Goldsworthy, Yayoi Kusama, Paul Klee and Caroline Jariwala, using their work to develop their own creative style and understanding of art. We encourage every child to see themselves as an artist, developing the skills and imagination to create, experiment and communicate their thoughts and feelings.

From the Early Years through to Year 6, our Art and Design curriculum is carefully planned to develop knowledge, skills and creativity over time. Children revisit and build upon key artistic techniques through exciting projects such as Aboriginal art, observational drawing, watercolour painting, Roman mosaics, photography, clay sculpture, graffiti art and digital animation. Each child records their artistic journey in a personal sketchbook, showcasing their growing knowledge, skills and creativity as they progress through school. We are proud to provide an inclusive and engaging learning environment where curiosity is nurtured, individuality is valued and every child is given the opportunity to enjoy the creative process and achieve their full artistic potential.
